Fiber Optics in Aerospace and Avionics Applications

Using fiber optic cable to connect avionics equipment and link high speed sensors allows airplane designers to reduce their wire weight by up to 80% while increasing throughput and extending the value of the cable plant. As avionic links upgrade from legacy CAN, 429, and 629 links to 10Base, 100Base, 1000Base, or even multi-gigabit links, the only viable wire scheme is light and glass. With new connectors and cabling providing truly rugged use and airplanes such as the F-18, F-22, and both Boeing and Airbus use in IFE and Flight Bags, fiber optics is poised to change the way aerospace networks are built.
