Fiber Optics in Military Applications
Using fiber optic cable to connect avionics equipment and link high speed sensors allows today’s warfighter designers to reduce wire weight by up to 80% while increasing throughput and extending the value of the cable plant. As links upgrade from legacy CAN, 1553, FDDI, or Fiber Channel links to 10, 100, 1000Base, or even 10-gigabit links, the only viable wire scheme is fiber optics. With new connectors and cabling providing truly rugged field use, the networked battlefield is emerging with wireless and wired systems needing high-speed backbones.
Sea, Air, Ground, and Space military divisions can be better prepared and more effective with improved communication and weapon accuracy that comes from utilizing fiber optics. COTSWORKS is supplying transceivers and cables to some of the most important rollouts of fiber optic wiring in tomorrow’s wartime theatres. Our transceivers are small, rugged, cost effective, and flight qualified. We are continuing to reduce the size and improve the reliability of fiber optic components so they can be used in more designs than ever before.
